What are bone graft material types?

Bone graft material types are the four main categories of bone used to restore or augment jawbone for dental implant placement: autograft (patient's own bone), allograft (human cadaver bone), xenograft (animal-derived bone), and synthetic (lab-created bone substitutes).

Dental implant placement often requires adequate bone volume in the jaw. When a patient lacks sufficient bone, dentists use grafting materials to rebuild the site. Four material types form the standard options in this field.

Autograft comes from the patient's own bone, typically harvested from the chin, jaw, or hip. It offers the highest success rate because it contains living cells and integrates directly with existing bone. The trade-off is the need for a second surgical site to harvest the graft.

Allograft comes from human cadaver bone, processed and stored in tissue banks. It eliminates the need for a second surgery and carries no disease transmission risk when properly screened and sterilized. The material provides structure but lacks the living cells found in autograft.

Xenograft uses bone from animal sources, most commonly bovine (cow). It serves as a scaffold for new bone formation and is readily available. Like allograft, it does not require surgery on the patient to harvest material.

Synthetic materials are manufactured in a laboratory, often from hydroxyapatite or other biocompatible compounds designed to mimic natural bone mineral composition. These offer consistency and availability but may integrate differently than natural materials.

The choice among these types depends on the extent of bone loss, surgical complexity, patient preference, and clinical goals. Many bone grafting providers in Chicago combine multiple material types within a single procedure.
