What is osseointegration?

Osseointegration is the biological process where jawbone grows and bonds directly to a titanium or zirconia dental implant post, anchoring it permanently in place.

When a titanium or zirconia implant post is placed into the jawbone, the surrounding bone tissue undergoes a healing process called osseointegration. Rather than the implant remaining a foreign object, the bone cells gradually grow around and bond directly to the implant surface at a cellular level, effectively fusing the post into the bone itself. This biological union creates a connection as stable as a natural tooth root.

Osseointegration matters because it determines whether an implant will remain secure and functional long term. The healing timeframe depends on the location and quality of bone. In the upper jaw (maxilla), osseointegration typically takes 5 to 8 months. In the lower jaw (mandible), where bone is denser, the process usually completes in 3 to 5 months. During this period, the implant is left undisturbed so bone can properly integrate.
