What is extraction socket preservation?

Extraction socket preservation is the placement of bone graft material into an empty tooth socket immediately after extraction to maintain bone height, width, and density before implant placement.

When a tooth is removed, the underlying bone begins to resorb (shrink) almost immediately. Extraction socket preservation fills this void with graft material to stabilize bone structure and prevent collapse of the ridge. The socket, left empty, loses 40 to 60 percent of its width within the first year after extraction, which complicates implant placement later.
